Asian Lady Beetles in the House: What Works in Minnesota

The multicolored Asian lady beetle looks close enough to a native ladybug that most people give it a pass, right up until a few hundred of them show up on the ceiling in October. They were introduced decades ago to eat crop aphids, and they did that job well. The problem is what they do after the soybean fields west and south of the metro get harvested: they fly to buildings to overwinter.

How they get inside

After the first hard frost, usually mid-October in the Twin Cities, lady beetles flight-test the sunny sides of light-colored houses. They squeeze through gaps around window frames, soffit vents, and where chimneys meet siding. A gap the width of a credit card is plenty. Once in a wall void or attic, they go semi-dormant and wake up whenever it warms, which in a heated house can be any random Tuesday in January.

Dealing with the ones already inside

• Vacuum them. Slip a knee-high nylon stocking inside the vacuum hose, secure it with a rubber band, and empty it outside. This keeps them out of your bag or canister.
• Don’t swat them on walls or curtains. They release a yellow defensive fluid that stains and smells bad.
• Skip indoor sprays. Dead beetles inside wall voids can attract carpet beetles, which create their own problem.

Stopping next year’s wave

The real fix happens in late September: seal the gaps you can reach and apply a residual exterior treatment on the south and west walls before the flights begin. On homes near open farmland in places like Carver, Scott, and western Hennepin County, that combination cuts the invasion down to stragglers.

One thing to know going in

Nothing eliminates the beetles already tucked into your walls from previous falls. They don’t breed indoors and they don’t eat anything in your house, so the winter stragglers are a nuisance, not damage. If someone promises total elimination mid-winter, be skeptical. The honest play is vacuuming through winter and a properly timed barrier next fall.
