Bed Bugs After Travel: What to Check Before You Unpack

Bed bugs don’t wander in from the yard like everything else we treat. They’re hitchhikers, and the ride is almost always luggage, secondhand furniture, or an overnight stay somewhere with an existing problem. That’s actually good news: a few disciplined habits at the hotel and the front door catch most introductions before they become infestations, and infestations are where the real money and misery live.

The five-minute hotel check

Do this before your suitcase touches the bed, whether it’s a resort in Brainerd or a hotel in downtown Minneapolis; bed bugs don’t care about star ratings.

  • Put luggage in the bathtub or on the luggage rack, away from bed and upholstery
  • Pull back the sheets and check the mattress seams and piping, especially at the head of the bed
  • Look behind the headboard if it lifts off the wall; it’s the number one harborage
  • Scan for the evidence: rust-colored or black ink-dot stains, shed pale skins, or the bugs themselves, apple-seed sized and flat

Find something? Ask for a different room, not adjacent and not directly above or below the original.

The coming-home routine

Unpack on a hard floor, not the bed or carpet. Everything washable goes straight into the laundry, and the dryer is the weapon: a hot dryer cycle of 30 minutes kills all life stages, eggs included. The suitcase itself can sit in a sealed garbage bag in the garage, and in a Minnesota winter you get a bonus option: a week in a car trunk at subzero temperatures is legitimately lethal to them, though it takes sustained deep cold, not one chilly night.

Secondhand furniture, the other front door

Curb-alert couches and thrifted upholstered furniture are the second most common introduction we trace in the metro. Inspect seams, zippers, and frame joints with a flashlight before anything crosses your threshold, and be extra cautious with mattresses and box springs, which honestly aren’t worth the risk secondhand.

Early signs at home

Itchy welts in lines or clusters, tiny blood spots on sheets, and those pepper-dot fecal stains on mattress seams are the classic trio. Check the seams and the bed frame joints with a flashlight. Early on, bugs stay within a few feet of where people sleep, which is why fast detection keeps treatment small.

The honest caveats

Two things worth saying plainly. Bite reactions vary so much between people that bites alone can’t confirm bed bugs; some people don’t react at all, and plenty of other things cause welts. And DIY foggers are worse than useless here, scattering bugs into walls and adjacent rooms and making professional treatment harder. If you find real evidence, don’t start spraying; get an inspection and an ID first.
