Silverfish in Your Bathroom: Causes and Fixes That Hold

Silverfish are the wriggling, silvery-gray insects you find in the tub at 6 am or darting under the baseboard when the bathroom light flips on. They’ve been around for hundreds of millions of years, which should tell you something: they’re not easy to get rid of, but they’re very possible to manage once you know what keeps them fed and comfortable.

Why the bathroom

Silverfish need humidity above roughly 75 percent to breed well, and a bathroom without a working exhaust fan delivers that daily. They also find food there: they eat starches and cellulose, which includes wallpaper paste, the paper facing on drywall, cardboard boxes under the sink, book bindings, and even the starch in some fabrics. The tub trap isn’t a coincidence either; they fall in chasing moisture and can’t climb the slick sides.

Signs beyond the live insect

• Tiny pepper-like droppings along baseboards and in cabinets
• Yellowish stains or scales on paper goods
• Irregular scraped patches or small holes in wallpaper, book covers, or stored photos

The fix, in order of importance

First, cut the humidity. Run the exhaust fan during and for 20 minutes after every shower, and fix it if it’s just spinning without moving air. Repair dripping supply lines under the sink. Second, remove food and shelter: swap cardboard for plastic bins, pull old wallpaper that’s peeling, vacuum along the baseboards. Third, treatment: we place sticky monitors to map activity, then apply targeted dust into wall voids and cracks where they harbor, plus baiting where appropriate. Set your expectations honestly

Silverfish are slow-cycle insects. Females tuck eggs into cracks where no treatment reaches them, and those eggs hatch over weeks. Even a well-executed job usually shows a declining trickle for four to six weeks rather than instant zero. If someone promises overnight elimination, they’re selling, not solving.

We see the heaviest silverfish pressure in pre-war homes in Minneapolis and St. Paul with plaster walls and original bathrooms, and in townhomes where the bathroom fan vents into the attic instead of outside. That misrouted vent raises attic humidity and creates a second silverfish habitat overhead, so it’s worth checking.
